The word calligraphy comes from two Greek words stuck together, kallos, meaning beauty, and graphein, meaning to write. Calligraphy literally means beautiful writing.
Before printing was invented around 1440 in Germany, all books and documents were written by hand (calligraphy), with the most famous examples being the bibles written by medieval monks (scribes).
